The Full Experience

Katherine Davis

Gonzo gazed at the men in the catalog.
Women in cashmere and pearls wrapped them.

His musty camo made him feel like a fool.
Only his dog, Dusty, admired it with a nuzzle.

Fingers trembling on the phone, he spoke
To a real person; they weren’t just at home.

He flipped pages that stuck to his oily nails:
One Fun in the Snow Pea Coat in Capillary;
Two dress shirts, French cuffs, in Pesto and Tablet;
Three pants in Wet, Gelatin, and Oval;
Four socks in Tobacco, Lager, Porcini, and White-Out.

Is that the total? (He imagined a curvy cashier
In a “Sassy” herringbone dress taking his order.)

What no credit card? Miss Sassy hung up on him!

He wiped some tears into Dusty’s fur that night.
He hadn’t fully understood the sacrifices of farm life.

Ma spent the next few days baling hay, he thought,
But on the third day she emerged from the far shed
With her arms full of laundry, all hand-sewn.

There were shirts in coffee, sugar cube, and grass;
And pants in corn husk, maple leaf, and mule ass.

He flexed every muscle as he modeled. He knew
All the other hands would want his kit and caboodle.
